Superb compilation by female singer Soulef. Born in Kairouan in 1943, she was mainly active from the 60s to the 80s and is considered as a central figure of modern Tunisian music. She interpreted more than 750 songs and made Tunisian music famous in the Middle-East. Her songs where written by composers that tended to visit anew the country's music (Ridha Kalaï, Salah El Mahdi, Kaddour Srarfi, Ali Chalgham, Chedly Anouar, Abdelhamid Sassi, Ahmed Hamza,...) getting their inspiration from traditional modes, lyrics & rhythms and make them fit in more contemporary orchestrations and aesthetics.
She mainly was issued on Tunisia's most important label, En'nagham, but also on Si Soulimane's La Voix Du Globe and Les Artistes Arabes Associés - that participated, as much as confirmed, her legitimacy in modern oriental music.
Let's finish with an anecdote: her interpretation of Sidi Mansour, originally issued on tunisien imprint El Fen, has deeply inspired Hans-Jörg Mayer to write Boney M.'s "Ma Baker".
Nice audio quality for this sealed item.
