Etat général : Original occasion Format : 33T Etat pochette / disque : NM / NM Label : not on label Année : 1980 Numéro / Pays de pressage : jeg001 - France
A beautiful French spiritual / modal jazz private press from 1980. The album was recorded in a desacralized chapel in Cambes, near Bordeaux; the band members all lived together in the attached convent.
Performed live by Perrine and Sophie Couronné, Jean-Paul Noguès, and Michel Ponticelli, and recorded / produced by Christophe Jégou, it features two long tracks per side. Introspective polyrhythms and polyphonies, with repetitive marimba patterns and saxophone solos, create a stunningly rich soundscape of multiple layers, despite the relatively simple orchestration. The musicians, then very young, revered the same idols—free and spiritual jazz leading figures such as Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane or Sun Ra. This incredible album has very few equivalents among the French musical productions of the time.
Even though they played some concerts and received a little press promotion, the record didn't sell very well back then—also because the company in charge of its distribution went bankrupt shortly after.
For lovers of Richard Raux, Mkwaju Ensemble, Archie Shepp, John Coltrane.
We're very happy to offer the last copies for sale. Except for some light warp, and very light surface noise at start, records are unplayed and in near mint condition.
