El Hachemi Guerouabi, who died in 2005, is still a huge reference in Algeria's contemporary musical history. Born in 1938 in Algiers, he dedicated his ealry years to soccer before vowing it to music. In the early 50s, he integrated Algiers' opera, progressively becoming a central figure of the country's most popular genre, châabi. His voice was one of the key to his fame - along his dexterity playing oud - at the point that emerged a style of his own, "hachmaoui". In the wake of Algeria's independance, at a time when North Africa was flooded with Egyptian and Near-East's cultural productions, in fully took part in châabi renewal. Guerouabi is considered as a "cultural monument". A & B side are long, uncut performances - it does not really matches with the tracklist. Sealed item.
